Sometimes don't you just wonder what people are thinking? I mean SERIOUSLY...I know I shouldn't be judgmental...but here goes...
Today I was in Walmart shopping, and as I was standing there looking for something I noticed a woman with two little kids sitting in her cart eating a box of crackers. This doesn't surprise me, since I see people all the time feeding their kids at the grocery store so they will stay quiet and cooperative while they shop, so although I never did that, I don't have a problem with it...But I have always assumed that most people then paid for the empty package of whatever it was that their kid consumed...right? Apparently I was wrong...
Right there in front of me, the woman took the empty box from the kids and set it on the shelf. The empty bag feel out of the box and onto the floor, leaving crumbs all over the place, and off she went on her way to do whatever it is she was doing...(probably stealing more food in another part of the store.) Now...maybe I'm wrong, and she brought the box with her from home...but that seems like a risky proposition...aren't the store people going to assume you are stealing it? Sometimes I'm afraid to walk in there with my coupon binder for fear that they will think I am trying to sneak out with a binder...and have had several imaginary conversations explaining to them that I brought it with me (no one has asked, but I'm still prepared in case they do...) so I certainly would never bring my lunch and eat it while I'm shopping. And even if she DID bring it with her or already pay for it, would it kill her to take the empty box to the trash? No wonder Walmart is always so dirty in the afternoon...
The ironic thing about this is that my sister and I had a conversation about just such a thing just yesterday. And actually this isn't the first time I've seen behavior like this that has left me scratching my head... Awhile ago I saw a mother in Harmon's open a bag of grapes right there in the produce section and let her kid start munching. How do you pay for something when you ate the evidence? A before and after weight of your kid? I never saw her put the kid on the scale before he started eating so I'm assuming that's not what happened. Not to mention those grapes hadn't been washed...eww! I guess she assumed if she was going to steal food, at least it was healthy food...does that count for anything? Maybe she thought he would only eat a few and it just wouldn't make that much difference in the long run, but if everyone in the store ate 10 grapes, wouldn't Harmon's eventually run out of grapes?
My sister had a similar experience as she watched someone peel two bananas for her kids so they could eat them. From now on I'm going to ask if I can weigh just the peels of MY bananas--it will make the bananas a whole lot cheaper. I better remember to take a Tupperware to hold the insides...and I hope they aren't going to want me to PAY for them...Better yet, maybe I'll just go down their Ziploc aisle and steal myself some bags...
So..apparently I didn't get the memo that said as long as you eat the food while you're still in the store, the food is free. I guess I know where I'm taking my family for dinner tonight...
