So, considering I am a political junkie, telling people not to vote might not seem like good advice. You'd think I'd be all mondo patriotic and out waving my flag telling everyone they better vote or else. But not me! All those "get out the vote" programs out there like Rock the Vote, the Motor Voter registration and the like are absolutely ridiculous and should be discontinued. Do we really need to register people at a rock concert? I mean, if you can't take the time to fill out the little card and mail it in to register yourself, you should be out of luck. The same goes for absentee ballots (except, of course, the military and those working overseas that really are ABSENT)...if you can't drag your fat lazy carcass off your sofa for 30 minutes to go to the polling place, consider yourself disenfranchised.
I know a lot of people probably don't agree with me...but I don't really care. I happen to be "one of those people" that believe you should have to pass a basic civics test in order to earn the privilege of voting. If you don't know the candidates, what they stand for, what the issues are, and can't make an informed decision then you shouldn't be allowed to participate in making decisions that affect the rest of the country. Far too many people vote based on what they think they know without taking the time to REALLY know.
So, going back to my initial statement, do I really think people shouldn't vote? Of course not. But I do believe that people should take the time to educate themselves about what is going on in this country before doing so. We are making decisions that will determine the course of this country for our children and grandchildren, and to take such decisions lightly is doing them a disservice. Politics might seem boring and maybe people don't want to invest the time to find out what they need to know, but I can guarantee there are plenty of people that ARE willing to invest the time and the ones with the strongest voices will win in the end.
Amen Sista! This is why I don't vote (shame on me, I know). I don't have a clue what's going on, but at least I don't pretend to! Some day I will take the time to do the research and make an informed decision. I'll put that on my list of things to do...along with the other things we talked about today! :)
