A Mystery Among the Peas

Patrick LOVES to plant peas.  Every year, as Spring is arriving, he makes a point of planting some peas, and last year he got a LOT of peas...enough that he was able to shell them and freeze a few bags of them.  He claims they taste better than any peas you buy at the store (I don't eat peas, so I wouldn't know...but I will take his word for it). He's getting quite good at it.
So this year, out he goes to plant his many rows of peas.  Despite the cold weather (or maybe even because of the cold weather) the peas are growing fabulously.  Thanks to all the wet weather he hasn't even really had to water them.
Then, the other day, he went out to check on them and noticed this oddity.
It's a little hard to see in the picture, but it appears we have some alien life form sprouting up right in the middle of the peas. Whatever it is, it's big enough to move that giant dirt clod.  Spooky.  It's actually shoving the peas right out of the way.
Patrick wanted to dig it up and get it out of the way, but I told him he should leave it so we can see what it is.  There are other little sprouts around in other areas of the dirt also, but none quite like this one.  We probably tossed some rotten something or other out there that had seeds in it, and now they are growing but I just don't know what that would be.
Maybe it's one of those man eating plants from the Little Shop of Horrors....That would be awesome.
